Spirit Guides

“There are moments in our lives when we feel despair and alone… But are we really alone?”

What Is A Spirit Guide?

According to theosophical doctrine, spirit guides are persons who have lived many former lifetimes, paid their karmic debts, and advanced beyond a need to reincarnate. Each is assigned to watch over an incarnate person, not only on this Earth, but on many other planets throughout the universe. Many psychics believe that spirit guides are chosen on “the other side” by us and God(s) before we incarnate and that they guide us to follow our life’s plan because we want them to.

Who Is A Spirit Guide?

The Gnostic religious view of a spirit guide is that, on the other side, you and your guide planned your life on earth before you incarnated. You live the life and your spirit guide helps you along the way. Thus, if this is the case, everyone has a spirit guide because everyone planned their life prior to being born. Therefore, the spirit guide couldn’t be a living relative or an animal, but could present itself as such. Furthermore, a guide is said to have lived at least one earthly life before becoming a spirit guide so that they can understand the struggles of human life.

Looks and Appearances

Many well-known psychics have publicly described their guides. Helena Blavatsky talked about being advised by “Mahatmas”, discarnate personages from India and especially Tibet, who dressed and behaved according to the dictates of their respective cultures. Alice Bailey also described having contact with a spirit teacher whom she called “The Tibetan.”

American Spiritualists of the 19th and 20th centuries often described their guides as resembling Native Americans. One popular spirit guide of this type, encountered by many Anglo-American Spiritualists, was named White Hawk. Among African-American Spiritualists, especially those in churches that were founded by or influenced by Mother Leafy Anderson, the Native American guide was named Black Hawk, and was presumed to be the spirit of the Fox tribe warrior of the same name.

Others described their guides in terms of what sounds like a mythologized Ancient Chinese appearance, and Irish guides were also common.

Sylvia Browne follows the standard of having a guide with a Hindi-like appearance, with her hair in a long braid and loose-fitting clothing. Browne’s Spirit Guide is to be named “Francine”. Francine has said she has a close friend on the Other Side named “Rahime”, who is also another Spirit Guide, who is said to have a middle-eastern appearance, wearing a turban.

Derek Acorah, a British medium often refers to his spirit guide, Sam, and while communicating with spirits often calls the spirit by his name. (i.e. “Can you tell me his name, Sam?”) Sam is an Ethiopian male who Acorah was a friend of in a past life some 2000 years ago.

Myself (Antonio Santos), refer to my spirit guide as Rubert, name I received back in the early 90s. In 1995 I chose to sign a contract with him, stating my intentions and wishes from that time on. Allow me to share this contract with you.

What do I want? (Today and forever)

I want to accelerate my personal evolution. I want Rubert, my spirit guide, to assist me in a greater capacity. I want my body to regenerate it self. I want to emanate health. I am willing to give up difficulty so that I can be a living example of what humanity can be! Rubert I want to work with you just as I want you to work with me. Show me what I can do. Give me the opportunity to live my light, to speak my truth, and to carry this light around the globe, with peace, love and honor!

To all my guides and all of those who are assisting me in my evolutionary journey on earth: It is my intention that I be successful. It is my intention that I be always safe in all things that I do. It is my intention that I receive love and give love in all things that I do. It is my intention that I have a good time and that I be provided for with prosperity according to my needs. It is my intention that I not become overly enamored of the material world. It is my intention to teach, learn and spread love, understanding, compassion, forgiveness and acceptance. I am in divine guidance. I am always at the right place at the right time. Everything I do is orchestrated for my higher growth, my higher consciousness and my higher evolution.

Rubert I want you to help me use the energy of God wisely and honorably… thank-you.

Yes, I qualify. I have mastered these rules, and I utilize them and put them to my will.

Contacting Methods

While several people offer techniques that they claim allowed them to meet their spirit guides, none of the methods have been scientifically proven to work.

These techniques range from astral projection techniques to simple mind visualization exercises. It is said that the spirit guide is not on the Earthly plane, but rather is communicating from “The Other Side.” “The Other Side” has a much less dense atmosphere than Earth, and therefore it is believed that we must be tuned in to our guides by freeing the mind or doing one of many meditations. Lucid dreams can also help with contacting a spirit guide.

Who are they?

A guide could be anybody, but often they have lived on earth many centuries ago. Because of the time spent in spirit, they have become highly developed in spiritual ways. They choose to remain close to the earth life, and act as a link and teacher. Many mediums will often tell of their guide as being a Red Indian or from some other exotic race. The reason is simply that Red Indians for example, lived a very spiritual existence, and also believed in their own psychic skills. Based on these backgrounds, they are ideally suited to spiritual work. But it is not always the case, the level of spirituality dictates if they’re able to take on the work, not the background. A guide could also be, as some mediums report, someone they knew in a previous life, or indeed a family member. Whoever the guide is, and from whatever background, the medium will have some form of affinity with them. It is this familiarity that bonds them and allows them to work closely together.

Do we all have a guide?

Wherever our life has led us, we all have a guide, although these may be referred to as Guardian Angels. These Angels will watch over us and try to steer us in the right direction ― our chosen Destiny. Perhaps you have had that ‘gut feeling’ that made you do something or not do something, often that is your Guardian Angel lending a hand. It is still up to you to follow or reject those feelings. Many of us will go through life totally unaware of these spirit helpers, often only being to able to listen when tragedy strikes.

As our spirituality increases, for whatever reason, we tend to attract spirit helpers around us. We may be told by a medium who they are, often this is a general description. But it is when we begin to develop our own psychic skills that we truly become aware of our guides.

Try it for yourself.

I often get asked how people can get to know their own spirit guide, so here are a few suggestions that might help you.

Begin with a prayer asking for protection and guidance. Then get yourself comfortable, if you prefer, set some gentle music playing in the background, aromatherapy candles can also help you relax, just be sure to choose those that calm and soothe not those that invigorate. Take some deep slow breaths, and calm your whole body, until you feel relaxed. Try to slow down, becoming so relaxed that your heartbeat seems to slow down, withdraw into yourself a little yet be aware. You can’t always eliminate normal noises such as traffic or people, but each time you try they will recede further away.

Next imagine a brilliant white light, for me this is in front and slightly to the left, but it can be anywhere, above, below, left or right. Look at this light as it gets brighter, see and feel how pure it is. Now start to draw the light towards you, bring it in towards your heart. Feel it enter and become one with you as it fills your entire being. Feel its purity and divine brilliance as it touches you from head to foot, sense how vibrant and living it is, it is more than light, more than purity ― it is a living energy.

Now create a place to meet and talk with your guide, this could be a beautiful garden, a summer field, a hillside – anywhere. Try to use the same place each time, so it becomes familiar to you. Ask for your guide to join you here. The act of asking him/her to join you demonstrates responsibility and ownership on your part.

Don’t expect some disembodied voice to suddenly start speaking out of thin air! It doesn’t happen, rather, spirit will speak to you in thought, in images and feelings. It’s more a case of somehow knowing what is meant, understanding comes from feeling the answers travel through you. In the same way don’t force the information, but let it come to you.

Finally, don’t be disappointed if you don’t hear your guide or build a foundation of learning from them. It’s enough to know that you have help around you. Just because your guide can’t be heard on a daily basis doesn’t mean you can’t develop mediumship. They often work in the background and will still assist you in the process.

The idea of spirit guides is not limited to the work of mediums or Spiritualists, but can be found in many cultures and beliefs. For example the peoples of Amazonian South America believed in ‘ Spirit Helpers ‘. These ‘helpers’ were typically the spirits of their ancestors or animals such as the eagle and jaguar.

Meeting Your Spirit Guides

The lessons below can be done in conjunction with the meditation, or another that is convinient for you. If you are writing your answers you are doing automatic writing. If you are using telepathic communication with your guide, be sure to write your responses down when you are finished, as one tends to forget what is given. If communication is verbal on your part, please use a recording device and record what you ‘hear’ or ‘see’. Ask questions only once. Accept the first answers.

Lesson 1 – Listening and Viewing

It’s time to meet one of your spirit guides.

Today you will ask spirit questions that are not personal, and can be answered by Yes or No.

They may be accompanied by physical sensations on your body such as:

  1. pressure on top of your head – opening of the crown chakra.

  2. a sensation on the left side of the body or face. The left side receives, the right side sends.

The left side goes to the right side of the brain, the intuitive side.

Before you start, you may sense the presence of your spirit guide.

Find a quiet place, free of distractions. Relax and get comfortable. Clear your mind. Focus on your guide.

Send the thought … Hello!

You may hear a greeting, but this is not necessary.

Send your Yes or No question telepathically or verbally i.e. Is today Monday?

Relax and allow the answer to come naturally as a thought.

Continue with other non-personal Yes or No questions until you are comfortable. Keep practicing. There is no hurry! Spirit has no ‘time’ table.

Lesson 2: Getting to Know your Spirit Guide

Prepare paper and pen.

Send the message What is your name?

If you have trouble understanding the name, focus, then come as close to what you hear as you can. Spirit will accept whatever name you give. Names can be long and may have to be shortened. There may be more than one name for a spirit i.e. Spirit Eagle.

Begin a dialogue. Trust what you hear.

Send the message (Name of guide) Are you ready to answer questions?

Wait for an affirmative answer.

Sample questions

  1. Do I know you?

  2. Have you ever helped me? If so, how?

  3. How many spirit guides do I have?

  4. What is the purpose of our connection?

  5. Are you my twin flame?

  6. What is my mission?

  7. Are you my only spirit guide?

  8. How many guides do I have?

  9. Other

Lesson 3 – Other Lifetimes Together

Prepare questions. Get comfortable. Greet your spirit guide.

Sample questions

  1. Did we know each other in another lifetime?

  2. How many lifetimes have we been connected? In what relationship?

  3. Have we ever reversed rules where I was your spirit guide while you lived on the Earth plane?

  4. Have you always been in my life in this incarnation?

  5. Other
